Toby has Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) or feline cutaneous asthenia (FCA), which causes him to have stretchy, loose and fragile skin, giving him an impawsibly adorable look.
KATNISS: Toby, I’m so glad you and Quinton were adopted from the RSPCA together.
TOBY: Oh, yes. I wasn’t going anywhere without my best furiend, Quinton! We are insepurrable.
KATNISS: And you both are what might be considered “diffurent.”
TOBY: Yes. The RSPCA was very upfurront about our diffurences and needs. Luckily, the Humans who adopted us were looking for cats who were “special” – cats who might not find homes as readily as others.
KATNISS: So Toby, you have EDS, but how is Quinton diffurent?
TOBY: He’s toothless! When we were rescued, Quinton had an abscess in his mouth and dirty teeth. So he had to have all his teeth pulled, but he eats purrfectly fine. Except that he shoves his entire face into his food. MOL!
KATNISS: When you were furst adopted, you were nervous and scared. You hid behind your brother a lot.
TOBY: Yes, I am a very sensitive soul. In the beginning, everything was freaking meowt. But now, we know we’re safe and loved, so we’re both totally at ease. Life couldn’t be better.
KATNISS: Fur those who don’t know about EDS, how does this condition affect your life and your care?
TOBY: Well, the main thing is that unfurnately, my skin is prone to cuts and tears. So Meowm has to keep my nails short and tend to any wounds I get. It’s not fun, but it’s manageable.
KATNISS: Besides hanging with Quinton, what are some things you enjoy doing?
TOBY: I love looking out the window and chattering at birds! I also adore having my belly rubbed – and it’s never a trap.
KATNISS: You sound so comfurtable and happy in your home.
TOBY: I am. Underneath this sad, saggy face is a big, happy grin.
