MY INTERVIEW WITH MARLA, aka “STEVE BUSCEMI CAT.”
KATNISS: So you were the purrverbial “cat that no one wanted in the shelter.”
MARLA: Fur real. I was left at the West End Shelter in Ontario California with my sister when were just days old. The staff bottle fed us because we were so tiny.
KATNISS: Your sister was adopted right away. And you…?
MARLA: I was still there two years later.
KATNISS: Meowch. So you’re just sitting there watching other cats and kittens get adopted into furever homes, thinking, “Someone take meowtta here.”
MARLA: Yes, but the staff loved me – they were pawsome. Someone had taken my photo and turned it into a mean-spirited meme comparing me to actor Steve Buscemi, so the girls at the shelter were very purrtective of me. These days, I embrace the comparison ‘cause he’s kind of a cool cat, you know?
KATNISS: I know this story has a happy ending – one day a woman came in looking for a cat, set eyes on you and it was love at first sight?
MARLA: Not exactly. When she saw me, she seemed kind of taken aback, to be purrfectly honest. But I felt a connection. I was so sure she was meant to be my Person… but then she left. I was feline so sad. But the next day, she came back and asked for me. That’s when I knew it was furever.
KATNISS: Such great mews! And for what it’s worth, I think your looks are striking. Unfurgettable. You have an amazing jawline.
MARLA: Thank mew. Actually, both my upper and lower jaws are deformed. I also have dental issues, but I eat and drink fine – except for the drooling. I also have some skeletal deformities – my legs are very long and one is longer than the other. My Person says I look like I’m walking on high heels. And because my toenails grow fast, I click around the house like a diva.
KATNISS: Are you the only cat?
MARLA: No, there are 3 other rescues, including the newest adoptee who has one eye.
KATNISS: What are your favorite things to do?
MARLA: I love cuddling with my brother Hank. I enjoy running as fast as I can around the house at night – that’s when the three young humans are sleeping, so they are not underfoot. I also like to swat Legos around and make biscuits on blankies.
KATNISS: You’ve been described as quirky. How so?
MARLA: Well, the Humans say I have a strange voice, as if Kermit the frog were meowing. And people often think I’m either bored or terrified, but that’s really just my face.
KATNISS: And what a face it is.
